How to use the UK VAT calculator

Use this UK VAT calculator to estimate tax on one amount. Choose whether the amount is VAT-exclusive or VAT-inclusive, enter the rate that applies to the supply, and add the amount. The result is an arithmetic estimate; the calculator does not decide which VAT treatment applies.

HMRC lists standard-rate VAT at 20%, reduced-rate VAT at 5%, and zero-rate VAT at 0%; some goods and services are exempt. Which treatment applies depends on the goods or services and how they are used. Check the current HMRC guidance before choosing a rate.

Adding VAT to a net amount

When the amount is before VAT, calculate VAT as net amount × rate ÷ 100, then add it to the net amount to get the gross total. For example, £100 at 20% gives £20 VAT and a £120 gross total.

Removing VAT from a gross amount

When VAT is already included, calculate the VAT portion as gross amount × rate ÷ (100 + rate), then subtract it to find the net amount. At 20%, the VAT fraction is one-sixth: a £120 gross amount contains £20 VAT and £100 net.

Check these inputs

  • Choose Add VAT to Net when your amount excludes VAT; choose Remove VAT from Gross when VAT is already included.
  • Use the rate that applies to the specific supply. Do not assume the standard rate where reduced, zero-rated, or exempt treatment may apply.
  • The currency selector changes how the result is displayed; it does not convert currencies or determine tax treatment in another country.
  • This tool handles one rate and one amount at a time. Mixed-rate supplies, discounts, special schemes, exports, and invoice rounding may need separate treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Which UK VAT rate should I enter?

It depends on the supply and how it is used. HMRC lists the standard, reduced, and zero rates and explains that some supplies are exempt. Check the current HMRC VAT rates guidance before relying on a result.

How do I remove VAT from a total?

Select Remove VAT from Gross. For a rate of r%, the included VAT is gross amount × r ÷ (100 + r); subtract that amount to get the net value. At 20%, the VAT fraction is one-sixth.

Does this calculator tell me which rate applies?

No. It uses the rate you enter and does not classify a supply, confirm registration status, or determine cross-border VAT treatment. See HMRC’s guidance on how much VAT to charge.

Can it replace an invoice check or tax advice?

No. It is a basic estimate and does not cover every VAT scheme, mixed-rate transaction, or invoice-specific rounding method. For detailed rules, consult the HMRC VAT Guide (Notice 700) or a qualified tax professional.

Official guidance

These examples follow HMRC’s published VAT-rate and VAT-fraction guidance. Rules can change and depend on the supply, so check the official sources for your circumstances: VAT rates, how much VAT to charge, and VAT Guide Notice 700.
